Wolf Point’s Sierra Summers ran to six gold medals during the recent Big Sky State Games, but her running career might be seeing more even awards in the future.

Summers is strongly considering completing in “open” races for Dawson Community College’s track program. She explains the arrangement will have her practicing with the team but taking only a couple of collegiate classes. “I can practice on my own, but I will try to make it to Glendive once a week,” Summers said. Her brother, Peyton, won both track and cross country state championships for Wolf Point this past school year. The 2024 Wolf Point High School graduate will compete in both sports at Dawson.

“I told them that I want to focus on distance runs,” Sierra said of her discussions with Dawson’s coaches.

If things go well this year, she is considering becoming a full-time college student the following year. She plans to take public speaking and math classes through Dawson.

“I’m going to see how open running for the college feels,” Summers said.

During the Big Sky State Games, Summers ran to a first-place finish in the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:32.15 on Saturday, July 20.

Her first-place honors during track events on Sunday, July 21, included the 5K, 800-meter run, 1500, 400 and 200.

“I just wanted to do some speed work and try new events,” she said. “I’m pleased with the half marathon time.” Accomplishments for her during her high school career included placing 10th at the Class B state cross country meet as both a freshman and sophomore in Wolf Point. She took 17th at the Class C state meet for Frazer as a junior and broke the school’s record for the 1600-meter run.
