According to Standley, floriculture is geared more towards teaching kids the skills they need for growing and arranging flowers or working in a greenhouse, but it also touches on the ability to talk to strangers, ask meaningful questions, listen to others, solve problems, communicate clearly and persuade others are skills everyone uses, regardless of their job.

Erin Roedeske of Wild Prairie Floral Designs in Savage assisted with the floriculture competition. She said her career began with an FFA event. Her business specializes in weddings and special events and survives largely by word of mouth. “A lot of these kids call me for prom flowers,” said Roedeske.

The Big Muddy is the only district in the state that offers a floriculture contest. “It’s great to see so many kids from around our corner of the state in such a competitive environment,” said Standley. “Ag sales is one of the CDEs in Montana where only the top half of teams in each district are eligible to compete at state.”

The state events for both ag sales and floriculture will be held at Montana’s FFA convention in Great Falls March 24-27.
