Treasury Extends Tax Filing Deadline
U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin announced Friday, March 20, that the deadline to file will be extended from April 15 to July 15 for all individuals and corporations.
“We’re facing unprecedented challenges and great uncertainty as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak,” Rep. Greg Gianforte said. “I appreciate President Trump and Secretary Mnuchin moving Tax Day to July 15 to provide Americans with relief during this public health crisis.”
Thursday, Gianforte and 17 other lawmakers urged Mnuchin to extend the federal tax filing deadline to July 15. In a letter to Mnuchin, Gianforte and lawmakers wrote, “We are writing you today to request that you further expand these actions to provide additional relief and reduce confusion. Specifically, … we believe the extension on tax filing [to July 15] should apply to all taxpayers automatically.”
On March 17, the U.S. Treasury Department announced many individuals and corporations can defer tax payments for 90 days due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Gianforte requested the delay in a March 16 letter.
