More than 100,000 Montanans had a special reason to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the Montana Tobacco Quit Line on May 10, each received assistance from the Montana Tobacco Quit Line to quit tobacco for good. The quit success rate for Montanans who utilize the Montana Tobacco Quit Line is 36 percent, which is significantly higher than people who try quitting alone, 4-7 percent.
While we have seen moderate declines in adult tobacco use from 2004 to now, we still have one in four Montanans using some form of tobacco, whether it be cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, or a combination of these. Our work is far from over.
Over the past 16 years, the Montana Tobacco Quit Line has offered free help to Montanans who want to quit tobacco. The Quit Line currently offers five free coaching sessions with eight weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy, as well as Bupropion at a $5 copay. The Quit Line has also made improvements over the years to better reach populations targeted by the tobacco industry.
In 2013, the Quit Now Montana Pregnancy Program launched to help Montana pregnant women who want to quit tobacco. This program offers nine free coaching calls with a dedicated female coach as well as cash incentives with each completed coaching call.
In 2015, the American Indian Commercial Tobacco Quit Line launched, which offers 10 free coaching calls with American Indian coaches who can speak to the culture and quitting commercial tobacco.
In 2019, the Quit Line launched its newest program, My Life, My Quit. My Life, My Quit is a free texting/chat program for youth who are looking to quit all forms of tobacco.
This year, our tobacco prevention efforts focused on youth who use tobacco, specifically e-cigarettes or vaping devices. Thirty percent of Montana high schools currently use e-cigarettes/vaping devices and 36 percent of youth in Roosevelt County currently use e-cigarettes/vaping devices. We know nicotine harms the developing brain which is why we are working to prevent youth usage as well as promoting My Life, My Quit for youth who currently use tobacco.
The Montana Tobacco Quit Line, along with FDA-approved cessation medications available through enrollment, is a proven and effective way to help you quit tobacco use successfully. Tobacco users who use the Montana Tobacco Quit Line are seven to 10 times more likely to quit than if they were to try alone.
