Fishing Pond in Culbertson Breaks Ground

After more than six years of planning, hoping and dreaming, a group of Culbertson area residents joined together to break ground on Ike’s Fishing Pond and Walking Path in Culbertson Aug. 18.

“We’re really excited about it,” said volunteer project manager Kenneth Forbregd. “Things were really coming together in the past few years with the donation of land from Butch and Chris Finnicum and today Hurley’s Oilfield Service is rolling in with their equipment, this is really happening.

The pond and hiking path are the result of a multi-year collaboration with the Town of Culbertson, Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, the Culbertson Lions Club and community members.

In 2019, the project received a grant from the Montana Department of Commerce and Tourism. Leona Colvin assisted in writing the grant. This year, the town selected local contractor, Hurley’s Oilfield Service to build the project.

“We are happy to help make this dream a reality,” said Lary Pearson, with Hurley’s Sales and Service, “Our company appreciates the chance to support this positive community effort.” Some community members have already helped with significant donations for Ike’s Pond, including a donation of 6.5 acres of land and many hours of volunteer time, labor and equipment to clean up the area in preparation for the pond and related construction.

The 6½-acre project site is located within Culbertson city limits along U.S. Hwy. 2 just west of town.
