The Culbertson Cowboys faced quite a challenge to open their football season. The Cowboys took on the defending Class C state champions.

The Cowboys struggled with turnovers and lost the opener by a 48-0 final on Friday night, Sept. 4.

“My kids continued to fight regardless of the score,” Culbertson coach Brian Manning said. “We were able to move the ball but kept turning it over.”

Fairview accounted for 26 of its points during the opening quarter of action.

After the Cowboys came up short on a fourth-and-two play on their first possession, Fairview scored on a 24-yard keeper run by quarterback Kanyon Taylor.

On the ensuing kickoff, Fairview's Martin Manuel recovered a short kick. The Warriors went on to score on an eight-yard dash by Brady Buxbaum. After an interception by Buxbaum, Fairview's next touchdown came on a six-yard pass from Taylor to Hunter Sharbono. Fairview's final touchdown of the first quarter was on a 16-yard throw from Taylor to Sharbono for a 26-0 margin.

The Cowboys put together a nice drive as passes from Payton Perkins to Michael Pederson and Canaan Boyd highlighted the possession. The threat ended inside the Fairview 20 when a fourthdown attempt came up short.

Culbertson's Justice Bengochea then intercepted a pass, but the Cowboys weren't able to turn the play into points.

Fairview's only touchdown of the second quarter was scored by Sharbono on a nine-yard run for a 34-0 margin.

The two touchdowns by Fairview in the third quarter came on a 60-yard run by Buxbaum and a 10-yard pass from Taylor to Jaxon Vitt.

Bengochea led the Cowboys with 33 rushing yards. Perkins completed seven of 13 pass attempts for 37 yards.

The Cowboys return to action with a home contest against Ekalaka on Friday night, Sept. 11.
