An explosive Froid/Lake six-man football squad got off to a strong start and opened its season with a 60-12 home victory over Bainville Saturday afternoon, Sept. 5.

The Red Hawks jumped ahead by a 33-0 half-time advantage on their way to the impressive win.

“Our blocking and our physical play,” Froid/Lake coach Michael Ritter said of what he was most pleased with in the victory. “Our blocking set the tone.”

That strong blocking certainly led the way on Froid/Lake's first offensive possession as four straight runs by quarterback Mason Dethman headed the Red Hawks to the end zone. The freshman scored from four yards out with 8:40 left in the opening quarter.

Froid/Lake's hope is that the drive didn't only set the tone for the game but for the entire season. The Red Hawks are looking to earn more than last year's threewin total.

“I'm glad that we got this one,” Reiter said. “It was great.”

A nice defensive play by Bainville's Charles Butikofer stopped the Red Hawks on their next drive, but the powerful running of freshman Nate Stentoft soon put Froid/ Lake back into scoring position. The Red Hawks reached the end zone on a 28-yard dash by Ashdyn Hobbs with 3:02 left in the first quarter. Dethman kicked the conversion for a 14-0 lead.

After heavy quarterback pressure by Walker Ator forced the Bulldogs into a punting situation, the Red Hawks scored again on a 20yard run by speedy Connor Huft for a 20-0 margin to end the quarter.

Froid/Lake appeared ready to score again a short time later when Issac Johnson accounted for an interception. That threat, however, ended when Butikofer recovered a fumble.

A pass play from Jesse Strickland to Butikofer put the ball near midfield. A throw from Strickland to Braeden Romo advanced the ball to the Froid/Lake 21, but the threat ended on a sack by Jason Eylander.

Quick passes from Stentoft to Ashdyn Hobbs and Connor Huft highlighted Froid/Lake's next possession. A 38-yard pass connection from Stentoft to Huft put the score at 26-0 with 5:43 left in the half.

After Johnson recovered a short kick, the Red Hawks reached the end zone on a 16-yard dash by Johnson with 3:30 remaining in the half. The Red Hawks were in business again thanks to an interception by Johnson. A four-yard pass from Johnson to Ashdyn Hobbs increased the margin to 40-0 at the half.

Froid/Lake's defense accounted for the first two touchdowns of the third quarter. Huft intercepted a pass and returned the ball 52 yards for a 46-0 lead. Dethman then picked off a throw for a 44-yard touchdown return.

The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown on a 55-yard run by Romo with 1:19 remaining in the third quarter.

The game's final touchdown came on a 15-yard run by Austen Hobbs with 7:14 left. Johnson kicked the conversion for a 60-6 margin.

Bainville scored on a 27yard run by Strickland with 3:19 remaining.

Froid/Lake travels to Savage on Friday night, Sept. 11. Bainville hosts Richey/Lamber on Saturday, Sept. 12.
