Poplar Hosts Cross Country Meet, Both Home Teams Take Third Place
Poplar placed third in both the boys and girls team standings at their home cross country meet that attracted 200 runners on Saturday morning, Sept. 5.
The Indians finished with a score of 76 points in the boys competition. Glasgow won the meet with 39 points and Richey/Lambert took second with 52 points.
Poplar's Hudson Atkinson, a senior, finished third with a time of 18:32.18.
“I'm happy. I took off two minutes,” Atkinson said after the race. “I did the best that I could.”
The top two runners of the meet were Samuel Smith of Richey/Lambert with a time of 17:01.82 and Glasgow's Carl Zabrocki at 18:06.96.
“He's doing really well. He's really improved,” Atkinson said of Zabrocki. “I'm glad that he's putting in the hard work.”
Also placing in the top 20 for the Indians were Morgan Mathison at 14th with a time of 20:51.71, Polito Garfield in 17th place at 21:18.34 and Geordy Medicine Cloud in 19th at 21:30.57.
“Everybody improved by 45 seconds or more. We're making our way up there as a team,” Atkinson said of his teammates. “If we keep working, we might have a chance to get something to bring back from State.”
Kobe Daniel finished 23rd at 21:58.25. Thomas Jerome took 31st at 25:24.07. Delray Lilly ran the course in 27:46.54 for 42nd place. Finesse Headdress had a time of 32:26.58.
Poplar's girls placed third with 96 points. Glasgow earned first with 53 points and Culbertson captured second with 95 points. Also in the top six were Scobey at 122, Fairview at 153 and Malta at 175.
Glasgow's Iris McKean won the individual title with a time of 19:50.40. Plentywood's Annie Kaul finished second at 20:34.11 and Mon-Dak's Elizabeth Field took third at 21:57.10.
Allie Azure, a junior, led the Indians with a time of 24:27.16 for a seventh-place showing. Jazmyn Carry Water, a sophomore, earned 12th at 25:33.71. Teagan Escarcega was 18th at 27:00.33.
Mailey Wells placed 27th with a time of 28:04.09. Gracelynn Medicine Cloud finished 32nd at 29:34.12. Rikki Belton was 41st at 32:02.83. Jayme Red Boy placed 42nd at 32:28.80.
