Culbertson Town Council Votes To Hire Christoffersen As Attorney

The Culbertson Town Council decided on Monday night, Sept. 14, that it was time for a change.

Council members voted by a 3-1 margin to replace long-time city attorney Greg Hennessy with the Christoffersen and Knierim firm. Hennessy has served as the city’s attorney since 1979.

Council member Dave Solem made the motion to hire Christoffersen and Knierim. Council member Mark Nelson seconded the motion.

“My number one reason is she’s right next door and she’s a little cheaper, too,” Solem said. “It’s not that Greg is doing a bad job, but we should use the resources that we have in town.”

Last month, the vote was split 2-2 regarding the matter. Council member Abe Rumsey changed his vote to support the hiring of Christoffersen and Knierim on Monday.

“I feel she will be a good fit for our town and council being just next door,” Nelson said.

The council approved the first reading of ordinance 242 after making some edits. The ordinance would decrease the limit on street parking from 30 days to 15 days and prohibit parking of trailers off the hitch. There will be an exception to service work vehicles if they contact the city.

The council approved a request by the Roosevelt County’s Sheriff’s Office for a new vehicle. The city has $40,000 in its budget for the expense.

“It’s our goal to purchase a vehicle every four years,” Culbertson Mayor Larry Crowder said.

The sheriff’s office responded to 227 incidents on the eastern side of the county from July 1 to Sept. 14. That figure includes 82 incidents inside Culbertson’s city limits.

Culbertson’s homecoming parade will start at the school and run east, staying a block south of Highway 2. The parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18. Council members approved the plan.

Ken Forbregd, project coordinator for the Culbertson Lions Club, said the fish pond is making excellent progress.

“Hurley’s joined us as a majority partner for the fish pond,” Forbregd said. “Because of that, things have been aggressive.”

He noted that the bridge has been installed. He feels that BNSF will make a donation in the future.

“We hope to have it full with water this fall,” Forbregd said.
