The Froid/Lake Red Hawks got their offensive attack going late in the first quarter and then exploded for a key 50-19 Class C football victory in Savage on Saturday night, Sept. 12.

The Red Hawks trailed 13-0 and were being outplayed until Ashdyn Hobbs caught a fourth-down pass from Mason Dethman and broke loose from two tacklers to score on a 41-yard play. Issac Johnson kicked the conversion to pull Froid/Lake to 13-8.

“The game started to turn when we scored our first touchdown,” senior Jason Eylander said after the conference victory. “We then knew we could score. Savage is a really good team and we didn’t come out strong.”

Froid/Lake went ahead on its first possession of the second quarter when Dethman and Johnson connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass for a 14-13 lead with 8:21 left in the half.

“We just started doing what we were supposed to do,” Froid/Lake coach Michael Reiter said of the turnaround. “Our defense was awesome. It was a great team win.”

The coach thanked the team’s fans for an outstanding turnout in Savage. “We had a great following, we really do,” he said. Savage entered the game with a 1-0 record after defeating Wibaux, 56-0.

With Froid/Lake ahead 14-13, the Warriors moved back ahead on a 41-yard pass to Sterling Thiel with 2:14 remaining in the half.

The Red Hawks responded by driving deep into Savage territory on a 22-yard completion from Dethman to Colt Miller. Three plays later, Froid/Lake reached the end zone on a 16-yard pass from Dethman to Miller with 1:24 left in the half. Johnson’s kick put the margin at 22-19.

The Red Hawks’ defense then stepped up with senior Walker Ator stripping the ball from the quarterback and Miller recovering the fumble at the Savage 17. Froid/Lake went on to score on an eightyard dash by Hobbs. Johnson’s kick was good for a 30-19 lead to end the half.

Froid/Lake accounted for the third quarter’s first touchdown when Dethman connected with Eylander on a crossing route for a 47yard play and a 36-19 advantage.

The Red Hawks increased their lead to 42-19 on a fouryard pass from Dethman to a wide-open Eylander with 47 seconds left in the third quarter.

Froid/Lake finished the scoring on a 68-yard counter run by Connor Huft. Johnson’s kick put the margin at 50-19 with 4:48 remaining.

The Red Hawks, 2-0 for the season, will host defending state champion Jordan at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
