Red Hawks Edge Culbertson In Volleyball Play

The Froid/Lake Red Hawks posted a three-straight set victory over Culbertson in a well-played volleyball match on Thursday.

Froid/Lake won by a 25-17, 25-20, 25-20, final during the match held in Medicine Lake.

“I was satisfied with how they played,” Froid/Lake Coach Kiah Smith said.

The hard-hitting Red Hawks gained a 5-2 advantage as 6-2 senior Sydney Dethman accounted for a block and two kills during the early going.

After the Cowgirls fought back to 6-5 on kills by Cody Larsen, Froid/Lake increased the margin to 11-7 on a block by Dethman. The net play of Dethman and Dasani Nesbit helped put the score at 20-10.

The Cowgirls closed the gap to 22-13 on kills by Kylie Portra and Larsen, but another kill by Nesbit led Froid/ Lake to a 25-17 win.

Kills by Aleah Johnson and Dethman put the Red Hawks up 3-1 early in the second set. Froid/Lake moved ahead to 8-4 on kills by Dethman, Nesbit and Carolyne Christoffersen.

Culbertson fought right back to 9-7 on a pair of aces by Makena Hauge. Ahead only 11-10, the Red Hawks gained more control on a tip by Meg Ator, an ace by Johnson and a kill by Christoffersen.

The Cowboys responded with net winners by Portra, Hauge and Larsen to pull to 15-14.

Froid/Lake then accounted for four straight points including one on a kill by Nesbit. After aces by Hauge and Larsen got Culbertson as close as 21-19, the Red Hawks won by a 25-20 margin on an ace by Kinsey Rasmussen and a kill by Dethman.

Blocks by Dethman led Froid/Lake to a 16-6 advantage in the third set. The Cowgirls kept fighting back with a spike by Portra and aces by Anissa Bengochea bringing them to 19-15. A block by Hauge pulled the Cowgirls to 19-16.

Kills by Nesbit and Dethman increased the Red Hawks’ lead to 23-18. Froid/ Lake ended the game at 25-20 on an ace by Rasmussen.

Leading Froid/Lake’s attacks were Nesbit with 12 kills and Dethman with 11 kills. Dethman finished with 11 blocks.

Other leaders for the Red Hawks included Ator with 22 assists and Rasmussen with four aces.

Portra scored 13 kills for the Cowgirls. Hauge accounted for three aces, five kills and two blocks.

Koree Marchwick had two kills and 15 assists. Larsen finished with one ace and seven kills.

After defeating Culbertson on Thursday night, Froid/ Lake cruised to a 25-7, 25-7, 26-24, victory in Nashua on Friday.

“We played really well. We are figuring out everything,” Dethman said of the team’s solid week. “We’re playing as a team.”

The Red Hawks will travel to Bainville Thursday, Sept. 24, and host Lustre Christian in Froid Friday, Sept. 25.
