Whether it’s a cross-country race, a dramatic performance or a musical selection, high school senior Colby Olson shines for Culbertson.

Olson has recently been selected to perform in the Northwest International Festival of Music held at Minot State College.

“I needed to audition for it,” Olson said of the music festival. “I got accepted a couple of weeks ago.”

Olson, who plays the trumpet, explains that the festival will be held on Oct. 29-31. The event includes the gifted musicians preparing selections for a concert.

Band is one of Olson’s favorite activities at Culbertson High School. He consistently earns “I”s at district and state music festivals.

Another activity where Olson earned honors is speech and drama. He placed fourth at the state competition for dramatic solo last year.

“I was someone on death roll who was about to die,” Olson said of his drama selection. “It interested me. I felt like it would be a challenge.”

He said Ms. Gustafson and Ms. Iversen do excellent jobs as advisors for the speech and drama program.

“It’s really good,” Olson said of the program. “Usually most of us make it to state.”

The National Honor Society member serves as Culbertson’s student council president. The group is starting to work on Christmas games for the school. He was pleased on how homecoming activities were conducted this year.

“It went really well,” Olson said. “I liked how we tried to make working on floats more easy.”

As far as sports, Olson competes in cross country and track. He was Culbertson’s top runner throughout the cross-country season. He says cross country is his favorite activity.

“It’s a smaller team. We get to knew each other better,” Olson said.

He competes in the high jump, long jump and 1600-meter relay in track.

Olson is undecided which college he will attend. His interests include being an air traffic controller or going into accounting.
