The Froid/Lake Red Hawks put up a good fight but lost to Plentywood, 16-25, 16-25, 16-25, in the District 1C volleyball tournament’s championship match on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The Red Hawks will enter the Eastern C divisional tournament as the second seed from District 1-C. They will face Circle at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, in Sidney. Advancing to the divisional tournament from District 1C were Plentywood, Froid/ Lake, North Country, Fairview and Richey/Lambert. Representing District 2C will be Broadus, Jordan and Circle. The top two teams will advance to the state tournament.

Froid/Lake opened the district title match on a strong note as kills by Sydney Dethman led the way to a 3-1 lead. The hard hitting of Donn Longan and serving of Shayle Fawcett put Plentywood ahead 12-5.

Dasani Nesbit scored two kills to pull the Red Hawks to 13-7, but Plentywood gained a 20-10 advantage. Froid/Lake came as close as 22-15 on two net winners by Dethman and a block by Nesbit. A kill by Longan gave the Wildcats a 25-16 victory.

In the second set, the Red Hawks trailed by only a 14-11 margin until the Wildcats ran off six straight points.

After a block by Dethman cut the gap to 23-15 and a kill by Nesbit put the margin at 24-16, Plentywood ended the set on a kill by Kate Simonson.

The Wildcats took a 14-7 lead in the third set, but Froid/Lake responded with three kills by Dethman and an ace by Aleah Johnson for a 15-13 game.

Three straight kills by Longan increased Plentywood’s lead to 19-14. The Wildcats used kills by Longan and Liv Wangerin down the stretch for the 25-16 victory.

Leaders for Plentywood included Longan with 23 kills, Wangerin with seven aces, 10 kills and two blocks and Ashtyn Curtiss with three aces and 19 assists.
