Poplar Flea Market Seeks Indoor Space
Bainville’s Diane Panasuk has been hosting an ongoing flea market in Poplar whenever weather and vendors cooperate. She and other vendors from the Bainville area set up shop on the east side of Tribal Express in Poplar, south of U.S. Highway 2.
While the pandemic is forcing closures and event cancellations around the region, the flea market, situated outdoors, continues to pop up regularly. As another bout of cold weather looms, Panasuk is looking for indoor accommodations.
Teresa Ross, also of Bainville, told the Northern Plains Independent that she has been participating in Panasuk’s market for at least two years. She said the group has used indoor spaces like the bingo hall and cultural center in Poplar in the past, but that they are now looking for a space to use through the winter. She said cleaning has been a sticky issue, with available facilities lacking staff or capacity for cleanup. Panasuk, Ross and other vendors like Bainville’s Lorrie Picard pay $5 each to the landowner for use of the site. The price is right, but the vendors say it’s time to move inside.
“There’s a need in this community,” said Panasuk. “We need a space indoors.”
