Roosevelt County Seeking New County Attorney
With Roosevelt County Attorney Austin Knudsen being elected the state’s new attorney general, the commissioners are now in the hunt for a replacement.
The county began advertising for the country attorney position this week. Commissioners said Knudsen will stay in the position through Dec. 31.
The commissioners explained they will appoint someone to serve in the position until the next election cycle, which occurs in November 2022. Commissioner Gordon Oelkers said the individual doesn’t have to live in Roosevelt County to be appointed, but that person would have to reside in the county if they ran for the office in 2022.
“It could be quite a while until we find someone,” commissioner Duane Nygaard said. “We will interview whoever applies.”
Commissioners are hopeful that they can appoint someone before the start of January.
“We have some names, but no one has contacted us yet,” Oelkers said.
Because the office is a non-partisan position in Roosevelt County, commissioners are totally in charge of appointing a replacement. If the position was party affiliated, that party would be responsible for providing names of three candidates to commissioners.
