In preparation for a possible COVID outbreak, the Fork Peck Tribal Executive Board has approved the renovation of three community centers so the sites could be used as quarantine facilities.

The board approved a total of $2.5 million to make the improvements at the Brockton, Fort Kipp and Oswego community centers.

Kaci Wallette, tribal executive board member and tribal health board member, said Corland Construction of Sidney has already started work at the locations. The projects must be completed by Dec. 21.

Improvements will include HVAC systems, new kitchen appliances, adding showers to restrooms and new roofs. Beds and cots will be available.

Wallette noted the Navajo Nation is now experiencing peak highs for COVID cases.

“We’re getting ready if it hits us,” Wallette said.

Other quarantine locations in the area could include Big Sky Motel in Wolf Point and the Poplar Cultural Center.

She said some Montana hospitals and extended care facilities are having bed shortages because of COVID. “They are turning away other patients,” Wallette said.
