Poplar Team Reaches Milestone

Future Farmers of America from around the area competed in floriculture at Bainville School Monday, Dec. 14. Bulldogs advisor Kellan Standley said attendance was record setting.

“I was blown away by the turnout,” said Standley. “This was the most floriculture participants at least since I’ve been in the district (8 years) if not ever. With COVID-19, I asked advisors to give me a ‘best-case’ count for planning purposes, expecting a lot of drops. Those never materialized, which is awesome. In speaking with other advisors, the thing that kept coming up was how ready everyone was/ is to be able to do something outside of their school, and how great it was to be able to have a hands-on, in-person event again.”

In the individual floriculture event, Wolf Point’s Emily Kinzie placed 22nd; Samantha Reed placed 26th and Adiea Erickson placed 33rd. Poplar students: Patricia Charboneau placed 57th and Roseanna Yoopee placed 63rd.

In the team floriculture event, Wolf Point placed ninth and Poplar placed 12th. Opheim won the team event.

Wolf Point advisor Martin Toavs told the Northern Plains Independent that only the floriculture group participated because of a mixup with sales literature for the boys.

Standley said the Poplar team reached a milestone: “Poplar just chartered this year and I believe it was their first FFA experience above the chapter level.”

The next district event is on Jan. 18 in Culbertson for ag mechanics and job interview.
