Fox Looks Forward To Session
When the Montana Legislature convenes on Monday, Jan. 4, Sen. Mike Fox, D-Hays, will begin his first term representing Senate District 16.
Fox said he’s looking forward to working for the district that runs from Chouteau to Roosevelt counties and includes parts of the Fort Peck and Fort Belknap Indian reservations.
The Democrat has been selected to serve on the business and transportation committees.
He is hopeful that he is successful with his first sponsored bill. Senate Bill 48 would allow the transfer of certain highway funding to the tribes.
“The State gets federal funds for highways,” Fox said. “In years past, the State has claimed mileage on the reservations but hasn’t done maintenance or road construction.”
Fox said the amount of funds varies year to year. He added that he’s received support for the bill from fellow Democrats.
“It was introduced a few years ago, but didn’t go anywhere,” Fox explained. “I need to go out and explain it.”
In addition, Fox is considering sponsoring other funds that deal with the distribution of federal funds.
As far as the session’s format, Fox said meetings will take place in a hybrid fashion with video conferencing often being available.
“We have plans for those who don’t want to be jammed in rooms,” Fox said.
He intends to be at person in meetings for at least the first week or two.
Fox feels economic development for Eastern Montana is a key issue entering the session.
“We need to bring businesses back to the small towns in the state,” Fox said. “We need to try to bring people back.”
He added that another issue is funding education from headstart through higher levels.
“That’s always a concern,” Fox said.
