Cowgirls Edge Savage At Home
With the game’s outcome on the line, Culbertson’s girls stepped up their defense and edged Savage, 33-29, on Friday, Jan. 15.
Ahead by only a 28-27 score, the Cowgirls added a free throw by Perla Purciaga with 2:24 remaining.
The Cowgirls’ Megan Granbois scored off a pass from Koree Marchwick for a 31-27 lead with 2:01 left.
A strong defensive play by Destiny Thompson stopped Savage on its next possession.
The Warriors pulled two points closer, 31-29, on a layup by Cambry Conradsen with 48 seconds remaining, but Culbertson’s defense held the Warriors scoreless the rest of the way.
Leading the Cowgirls were Granbois with 13 and Makena Hauge with 11 points. Burciaga scored three points. Adding two points each were Marchwick, Thompson and Haleigh Buck Elk.
Savage’s top scorers were C. Conradsen with nine, Teah Conradsen with nine and Brooke Reuter with six points.
The Cowgirls accounted for the game’s first six points on baskets by Hauge, Thompson and Granbois. A three-pointer by Hauge helped Culbertson take a 9-4 lead. A 17-footer by Hauge and a basket by Granbois, off a steal by Hauge, increased the margin to 13-4.
A hoop by Marchwick and an outside shot by Hauge gave Culbertson a 17-8 advantage. Savage battled back to cut the gap to 20-16 at the half.
Culbertson led 26-18 at the end of the third quarter. A 15-footer by Granbois put the Cowgirls up 28-21 with 6:14 remaining.
The Warriors struck for the next six points on two shots by C. Conradsen and a drive by Reuter to pull to 28-27 at the 2:37 mark.
