Playing without their All-State performer, the Froid/ Lake Red Hawks didn’t let that stop them from playing excellent defense and with great determination in a 42-28 non-conference loss in girls’ basketball play on Thursday, Jan. 21.

For nearly two and a half quarters, the Red Hawks competed evenly against the strong Scobey squad. Sydney Dethman, a 6-2 senior, missed the contest due to an injury.

After falling behind 6-1, the Red Hawks’ Dasani Nesbit drove for a basket. Baylee Davidson, a sophomore, connected on two free throws and a three-pointer to put the Red Hawks in the lead.

After two free throws by Meg Ator increased the lead to 10-6, Scobey’s hit a baseline shot for a 10-8 score at the end of the opening quarter.

The Spartans scored the first four points of the second quarter on a 15-footer by Karys Lamb and a 12-footer by Taylor Leischner, but Froid/ Lake’s solid defense kept the Red Hawks within reach. An inside basket by eighth-grader Mara Salvevold produced a 12-12 deadlock with 3:50 left in the half.

Down 14-12, Froid/Lake struck for the final five points of the half on a three-pointer by Davidson at the 2:11 mark and a hoop by Carolyne Christoffersen put the Red Hawks up 17-14 at intermission.

A basket by Christoffersen, a 5-10 sophomore, moved Froid/Lake ahead by a 19-14 margin with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter.

Scobey then gained control with the game’s next 15 points including two three-pointers by Gracee Lekvold and another three-pointer by Lamb for a 29-19 advantage.

Baskets by Salvevold and Ator closed the gap to 29-23 to end the third quarter.

After Nesbit drove in for a hoop to open the fourth quarter, the Spartans ran off the next eight points for a 37-25 margin.

Davidson led the Red Hawks with eight points. Nesbit and Salvevold each finished with six points. Ator and Christoffersen scored four points each.

Scobey’s top scores were Lekvold with 14 and Taylor with 12 points.
