Froid/Lake Girls Drop Away Contest
Playing without their All-State performer, the Froid/ Lake Red Hawks didn’t let that stop them from playing excellent defense and with great determination in a 42-28 non-conference loss in girls’ basketball play on Thursday, Jan. 21.
For nearly two and a half quarters, the Red Hawks competed evenly against the strong Scobey squad. Sydney Dethman, a 6-2 senior, missed the contest due to an injury.
After falling behind 6-1, the Red Hawks’ Dasani Nesbit drove for a basket. Baylee Davidson, a sophomore, connected on two free throws and a three-pointer to put the Red Hawks in the lead.
After two free throws by Meg Ator increased the lead to 10-6, Scobey’s hit a baseline shot for a 10-8 score at the end of the opening quarter.
The Spartans scored the first four points of the second quarter on a 15-footer by Karys Lamb and a 12-footer by Taylor Leischner, but Froid/ Lake’s solid defense kept the Red Hawks within reach. An inside basket by eighth-grader Mara Salvevold produced a 12-12 deadlock with 3:50 left in the half.
Down 14-12, Froid/Lake struck for the final five points of the half on a three-pointer by Davidson at the 2:11 mark and a hoop by Carolyne Christoffersen put the Red Hawks up 17-14 at intermission.
A basket by Christoffersen, a 5-10 sophomore, moved Froid/Lake ahead by a 19-14 margin with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter.
Scobey then gained control with the game’s next 15 points including two three-pointers by Gracee Lekvold and another three-pointer by Lamb for a 29-19 advantage.
Baskets by Salvevold and Ator closed the gap to 29-23 to end the third quarter.
After Nesbit drove in for a hoop to open the fourth quarter, the Spartans ran off the next eight points for a 37-25 margin.
