The Froid/Lake Red Hawks posted conference basketball victories at Brockton by large margins on Saturday, Jan. 23. Froid/Lake’s boys won by a 68-29 margin while the girls earned a 50-11 victory.

In the boys’ contest, the Red Hawks’ full-court zone defense frustrated Brockton during the first half. The Red Hawks accounted for nine of the game’s first 11 points with Tyler Wivholm scoring seven of those points including a three-pointer.

A drive by Mason Dethman and a basket by Wivholm off an assist from Javonne Nesbit produced a 13-4 advantage.

Froid/Lake then opened the second quarter with 11 straight points on a three-pointer by Bode Miller, two free throws by Colt Miller, a three-pointer by Dethman and a three-point play by Nesbit. Brockton fought back to 24-10 on two free throws by Treydyn Bauer, a drive by Allen Russell III and a steal and drive by Malcom Yellow Hammer.

A three-pointer by Quinn-Dale Pretty Paint got the Warriors as close as 26-13 with 4:23 remaining in the half.

The Red Hawks responded with the next 14 points including nine points by Dethman. Also scoring were B. Miller with a three-pointer and Caden Kelm with a basket.

After Brockton’s Yellow Hammer drove in for a basket with 32 seconds left in the half, Nesbit tallied the last three points of the half for a 43-15 margin.

The Red Hawks outscored Brockton, 10-4, in the third quarter.

Top scorers for Froid/Lake were Dethman with 17 and B. Miller with 14.

Also scoring were Wivholm with nine, Walker Ator with seven, Nesbit with six, Nate Stentoft with three, Kelm with two and Max Engelke with two.

Leading the Warriors were Yellow Hammer with 12, Russell with five and Pretty Paint with 11. Also scoring were Bauer with four and Jonathan Bender with two.

In the girls’ game, Froid/ Lake opened with the first eight points on four points each by Carolyne Christoffersen and Dasani Nesbit.

Four points by Baylee Davidson and another hoop by Christoffersen put the margin at 14-2 to end the opening quarter.

The Warriors opened the second quarter with a basket by Ava Lone Bear. The Red Hawks then struck for 10 straight points on four points by Mara Salvevold, a layup by Nesbit and a drive by Jae-Leigh Davidson.

A basket by Brooklynn Nordwick and three points by Salvevold put the half-time margin at 29-6.

The Red Hawks outscored Brockton 13-0 in the third quarter for a 42-6 advantage. Salvevold and Nordwick each scored four points in the quarter.

Salvevold scored 15 points to lead Froid/Lake. Also scoring were Nesbit with nine, Christoffersen with eight, Nordwick with eight, B. Davidson with four, J. Davidson with two, Alexa Nelson with two and Zoey Ator with two.

Scoring for the Warriors were Kyra Stormy with seven, KayJay First That Walks with two and Lone Bear with two.
