Brockton broke away in the third quarter to down Savage, 45-35, in a District 2C boys’ basketball play-in contest on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Ahead by only a 12-8 half-time margin, Brockton opened the third quarter on a three-pointer by QuinnDale Pretty Paint and a free throw by Malcom Yellow Hammer.

After a 17-footer by Savage’s Sloan McPherson at the 6:27 mark, Brockton ran off the next eight points, including four by Allen Russell III, for a 24-10 advantage.

Brockton led 26-16 after three quarters of play and increased the gap to 30-18 on a three-pointer by Pretty Paint.

After a drive by Savage’s Logan Nelson, Brockton accounted for the next six points on a 14-footer by Pretty Paint and four points by M. Yellow Hammer for a 36-20 advantage.

The scoring of Nelson and consecutive three-pointers by McPherson got Savage to 40-30 with 40 seconds remaining. A three-pointer by Nelson pulled Savage to 42-33 with 29 seconds left, but Savage couldn’t get any closer.

Leading Brockton were Pretty Paint with 16 and M. Yellow Hammer with 13 points. Also scoring were Russell with seven, Treydyn Bauer with five and Wambidi Yellow Hammer with four.

Top scorers for Savage were Nelson with 17 and McPherson with 14 points.

The young Bainville girls’ basketball team qualified for the district tournament by downing Brockton, 61-17, in a play-in game on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Brockton trailed by only a 12-9 margin late in the first quarter, but Bainville ended the quarter on a free throw by Lakyn Rabbe and a hoop by Sadie Ullmer for a 14-9 advantage.

The Bulldogs began taking control in the second quarter as points by Tally Berwick, Elsie Wilson and Rabbe produced a 20-9 lead. After a basket by Brockton’s Kyra Stormy with 2:41 left in the half, the Bulldogs accounted for eight of the last 11 points of the half on six points by 5-10 junior Micah Anderson and a hoop by Brecklyn Pippenger for a 28-14 lead.

Bainville dominated the third quarter as the Bulldogs outscored Brockton by a 25-0 margin for a 53-14 advantage. Leading the attack during the period were Wilson with eight points and Pippenger with six points.

Top scorers for the Bulldogs were Pippenger with 14, Ullmer with 10 and Wilson with 10.

Stormy led Brockton with nine points.

Also scoring were Ava Lone Bear with five, KayJay First That Walks with two and Hally Eder with one.
