Froid/Lake Opens With Victory
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks fought off an inspired Bainville team, 45-32, in the opening round of the District 2C girls’ basketball tournament on Monday, Feb. 15.
The Red Hawks accounted for the game’s first seven points on baskets by Carolyne Christoffersen and Dasani Nesbit along with a three-pointer by Baylee Davidson. Froid/Lake held a 16-9 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
Four straight points by Sydney Dethman increased the margin to 22-13 midway into the second quarter. After a three-point play by Dethman with 51 seconds left in the half, Bainville’s Elsie Wilson connected on a three-pointer to pull the Bulldogs to 27-18 at the half.
Froid/Lake’s defense held the Bulldogs scoreless in the third quarter and took a 37-18 advantage. Christoffersen, a 5-10 sophomore, tallied six points in the quarter.
Bainville battled back to 39-25 on a basket by Tally Berwick and a three-pointer by Kaitlyn Adkins in the fourth quarter. A three-point play by Brecklyn Pippenger got the Bulldogs to 43-28 with 1:41 remaining.
Leading the Red Hawks with 14 points each were Dethman and Christoffersen. Adding six points each were Nesbit and Davidson. Meg Ator scored five points.
Wilson led the Bulldogs with nine points. Also scoring were Pippenger with seven, Adkins with six, Berwick with six and Kendra Romo with four.
