The Froid/Lake Red Hawks won their first District 2C boys’ basketball tournament championship since 2006 when they defeated MonDak, 62-27, in Sidney on Saturday, Feb. 20.

“It’s huge,” Froid/Lake Coach Josh Stentoft said about winning the district title.

Junior standout Javonne Nesbit added, “It means a lot and it means a lot to our coach.”

The Red Hawks dominated from the start as they earned an 18-2 lead in the first quarter. “They were pretty focused and ready to play,” Coach Stentoft said. “They really played well defensively tonight.”

Nesbit noted, “We just worked together and were a team.”

The Red Hawks accounted for the game’s first six points on a basket by Colt Miller off a pass from Nesbit, a hoop by Tyler Wivholm off an assist from Nesbit and a turnaround shot by Nesbit.

The Thunder got on the scoreboard when Darian Holecek hit a 14-footer with 5:42 left in the opening quarter.

Consecutive three-pointers by Bode Miller and Wivholm increased the margin to 12-2. After two free tosses by B. Miller, a drive by Nesbit put the margin at 16-2. Free throws by Mason Dethman and Nesbit ended the quarter with an 18-2 score.

The scoring of Walker Ator and Wivholm increased the gap to 22-5. After Ator took a charge, B. Miller scored off a pass from C. Miller for a 24-5 advantage.

C. Miller and Nesbit led the Red Hawks late in the half to produce a 30-9 advantage at intermission.

A three-pointer by Mon-Dak’s Keegan Nelson started the third quarter, but B. Miller then accounted for five straight points. An impressive dunk by Dethman put the Red Hawks ahead 37-12.

A three-pointer and fastbreak drive by Dethman, a freshman, increased the margin to 44-18.

With the score at 44-16, a basket by Brent Stentoft and four points by Nesbit led the Red Hawks to a 50-17 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Red Hawks sat their starters in the last period.

Top scorers for the Red Hawks were B. Miller with 12, Nesbit with 11 and Stentoft with 11 points. Also scoring were Dethman with eight, Wivholm with seven, C. Miller with six, Ator with five and Caden Kelm with two.

Leading the Thunder were Erik Field and Nelson with six points each.

The Red Hawks will face Plentywood in the first round of the Eastern C divisional tournament that starts on March 3 in Sidney. MonDak will take on Dodson in the opening round.
