She travels about 25 minutes to school each day. Her senior class consists of five students. This type of high school situation might now appeal to some people, but Froid senior Sydney Dethman treasures her education and community.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Dethman said of being one of only five members in her senior class. “We started out with three or four kids. I think it’s just been me and Colt (Miller) who have been here the longest.”
She notes there’s plenty to appreciate about being a student in Froid.
“I love the small classes. The teachers are always there to help us,” Dethman said. “I love that we are such a supportive and friendly town.”
She says her favorite class is science. She doesn’t have a preference when it comes to teachers.
“All the teachers are awesome,” she said.
Although Dethman is known as a basketball and volleyball standout in the area, she has been involved in many other school activities including currently serving as the president of the student council.
She enjoyed competing in speaking events as a participant in Business Professionals of America. As a sophomore, she earned first-place honors in expository speaking at the regional level.
“It prepared me for speaking in front of others,” Dethman said. “BPA is very important to prepare you for business. It’s awesome that our school has it.”
When she was involved in FFA, her favorite activity was floriculture. “It was easy to do and it was fun,” she said.
As a member of the National Honor Society, Dethman took part in a food drive this school year that took place around Christmas time.
The All-State performer in volleyball and basketball competes in the high jump and relays during track season.
She plans to major in biology at Fresno State University where she signed to play for its NCAA Division I women’s basketball program.
