Red Hawks Knock Off North Country In Semi-final Round
Froid/Lake’s boys’ basketball team advanced into the divisional title game by fighting off North Country, 49-41, in the semi-final round of the Eastern C tournament in Sidney on Friday, March 5.
The Red Hawks led by only a 24-23 half-time margin, but consecutive three-pointers by Colt Miller opened the third quarter. After a steal by Tyler Wivholm, Mason Dethman hit a shot for a 32-23 advantage.
North Country battled back to 34-31, but two free throws by C. Miller and a pull-up jumper by Dethman increased the gap to 38-31. North Country’s Trey Johnson scored off a rebound to close the margin to 38-33 at the end of the third quarter.
After a three-pointer by Randy Gairrett pulled the Mavericks to 38-36 at the start of the fourth quarter, Froid/Lake’s Javonne Nesbit responded with a basket off an inbounds play and a three-pointer. A drive by Nesbit gave the Red Hawks a 45-36 advantage with 2:40 remaining.
The Mavericks kept the heat on and came as close as 45-41 with 1:23 left. Free throws by Nesbit and C. Miller in the last 27 seconds put the final score at 49-41.
C. Miller, a senior, led the Red Hawks with 24 points. Nesbit finished with 13 points.
Also scoring were Dethman with six, Bode Miller with four and Brett Stentoft with two.
Johnson scored 13 points to lead the Mavericks.
Trailing 9-8, the Red Hawks took an 11-9 lead on a three-pointer by C. Miller to end the first quarter.
A three-pointer by Jon Rey Taylor put the Mavericks ahead 17-15 midway into the second quarter.
Five straight points by C. Miller put the Red Hawks up 20-17.
Froid/Lake gained a 24-20 advantage on a drive by B. Miller with 1:58 left in the half, but North Country battled back to 24-23 at the half.
