A year after not having a track season because of COVID restrictions, Poplar is looking to build a strong, well-rounded track program.

The Indians have a turnout of 25 athletes this season.

“It’s a good amount considering after COVID last year,” Poplar coach Brent Moore said. “Basically, it’s like having two freshmen classes.”

There’s a lot of inexperience since the current sophomores haven’t been able to compete at the high school level yet.

“I have a lot of rookies in all grades,” Moore said.

Athletes returning with state experience include senior Keandra Martell in hurdles and junior Jazmin Gorder in the 1600-meter run.

Working with other athletes, the coaching staff is having other team members rotate different stations such as trying the discus, shot put or runs.

“They will recognize what potential they have,” Moore said. “We’re covering a lot of basics.”

He noted that junior high athletes also didn’t have a season last year.

Moore explains that many of the high school members have participated in other sports such as basketball, football or volleyball.

“Track cooperates all the other sports,” Moore said.

The Indians will open their season in Glasgow on Thursday, April 1.
