Although it featured a different format than in previous years, Schmeckfest was back at Lustre Christian High School on Friday, March 26.

A Schmeckfest, or festival of tasting, is a celebration honoring Mennonite culture and food. Lustre’s Schmeckfest features an all-youcan- eat smorgasbord of German foods as well as bake sales, vendors and auction items that both celebrate the unique Lustre community and raise funds for the school.

Due to social distancing concerns, the celebration was held in three different segments. Serving took place from 1-2 p.m., 3-4 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. Musical entertainment was held at 1:45 p.m., 3:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.

Another change was that the auction was held on-line this year.

Proceeds from the meal and auction items went to the school.

“This is our only fundraiser,” Jared Fast, head of the steering committee, said.

This year marked the 56th Schmeckfest. The menu included traditional German favorites, such as wurst, verenika, gravy, baked kraut, kirsche moos, portzilke, perishke and paepa naet.

Lustre Christian High School is an interdenominational non-profit organization. Lustre Christian High School started as a Bible school in 1928. It became a high school, graduating its first class in 1949. A 16-room student resident home provides on-campus housing for long-distance students. The school offers a college-prep curriculum taught by state certified teachers. School activities include music, art, sports, drama, journalism and social events.

Gifts from friends and proceeds from Schmeckfest allows for tuition to be kept low enough to make the educational opportunity available to anyone with a desire to attend.
