County Approves New Fire Truck For Froid

The Roosevelt County commissioners approved a request from the Froid Fire Department to purchase a new fire truck during their weekly meeting on Tuesday, April 13.

The truck will cost $40,100.

Commissioner Gordon Oelkers explained the vehicle was supposed to be purchased a year ago, but it was delayed because of COVID issues.

“The funding is available,” Oelkers said.

The county provides fire departments about $26,000 each year. Fire department also hold fund-raising events to purchase equipment.

The Department of Natural Resources and Conservation equips the fire truck.

Commissioners also approved approval of a $9,000 CARES grant for the Big Sky Airport in Culbertson.

After voting against purchasing a temperature control alarm for a patrol car last month, commissioners agreed to the $3,800 purchase. The alarm is a safety measure for the county’s new K-9 drug program dog. Oelkers explained the commissioners received more information since the first vote.

Commissioners had discussion about the safety coordinator contract since Sheridan County has opted out of the program. Roosevelt County and Valley County will need to share expenses if they continue sharing a safety coordinator. Cost of Roosevelt County is estimated to cost about $21,500.

Commissioners mentioned the possibility of hiring a part-time person as the safety coordinator and the benefits of having an office in Roosevelt County.

Commissioner Duane Ny-gaard asked about the possibility of adding Phillips County or McCone County to the arrangement. The decision was tabled for two weeks.

Resignations included detention center employees John Benavente, Tristan Randall and Jennifer Smith, and sheriff’s office employees Ryan VanKerkhove and Tonetta Cantrell.
