Gregory Hofman
Gregory Fred Hofman was born June 4, 1947, in Williston, N.D., to Fred and Dorothy Hofman of McCabe, Mont. He was baptized and confirmed in Ebenezer Lutheran Church. Greg attended Mc-Cabe Elementary School and attended high school in Culbertson. While in high school, he was active in FFA, played football and was on the 1965 District 2C Championship team for the Culbertson Cowboys.
On April 18, 1970, Greg was united in marriage to Judy Lyseng of Froid, Mont. They celebrated their golden anniversary on April 18, 2020.
Greg served in the Montana National Guard and retired after 21 years of service to his country. Greg served as the chief of police for the town of Culbertson and was the manager at Petrolane before working at Continental Grain just east of Culbertson. Greg then worked for the State of Montana as a G.V.W. Compliance Officer at the Culbertson scale for more than 20 years before retiring.
Greg was an EMT with the Culbertson ambulance service for 25 years. He was a member of the Culbertson fire department for 15 years and was involved with the Scouting program in Culbertson for over 25 years. Greg was an active member of the FFA alumni and drove a number of trips to the national FFA convention in Kansas City, Mo. He even served a term as the state president for the Montana FFA Alumni Association.
Greg raised cattle and helped his children with their FFA projects at the family farm in McCabe. Greg also spent many years operating the game clock for Culbertson high school basketball games. Greg enjoyed bowling, hunting and camping with the family. He enjoyed traveling to his granddaughter Caitlin’s basketball games. He was proud to become a great-grandpa this past December and was looking forward to meeting baby Elijah.
Greg and Judy began splitting time at the farm in Mc-Cabe and Mesa, Ariz., in 2012. They made a lot of new friends and he enjoyed playing shuffle board while escaping the cold winter weather back in Montana.
Greg died at the age of 73 on Feb. 17, 2021, in Mesa, Ariz., following complications after contracting coronavirus.
Greg is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Fred Hofman (Faith) of Norris, Mont.; daughter, Terri Ann Merrill (Brian) of Culbertson, Mont.; sister, Cheryl Arthur (Ron) of Culbertson; brother, Dean Hofman of Worden, Ill.; brother, Jerry Hofman (Jennifer) of Bakersville, Calif.; granddaughter, Caitlin Carlson (Andrew) of Carey, Idaho; grandson, Cole Hofman of Culbertson; granddaughter, Courtney “Shorty” Hofman of Sidney; granddaughter, Adele Hofman of Norris, Mont.; and great-grandson, Elijah Gregory Carlson of Carey, Idaho.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Dorothy Hofman; and his son, Theodore Gregory Hofman.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in McCabe, Mont., with Pastor Greg Holler-Dinsmore officiating.
