Culbertson’s Granbois Finds Success In High Jump
Considering it was an event that she originally didn’t want to try, Culbertson’s Abbey Granbois ended up doing quite well in the high jump.
“I wanted to do the long jump, but the track coaches forced me into the high jump,” Granbois said of her beginning days with the sport.
She started to like the event and enjoyed success in the high jump. As a sophomore, she placed fourth at the Class C state meet.
Granbois finished her high school career by clearing 5-3 to earn second place at this year’s Class C state track meet.
“I was very happy with the placement,” Granbois said. “It was fun being in Missoula. The support was amazing.”
Saco’s Teagan Erickson cleared 5-4 for top honors. Granbois noted that Erickson was very supportive and displayed great sportsmanship.
Granbois explained that she came very close to also clearing 5-4 but hit the bar with her calf. “I almost made it on my third attempt,” Granbois, who graduated from Culbertson High School in May, said.
She noted that her coach, Mike Olson, said he was proud of her after the competition.
This was a special season for Granbois as she teamed with sophomores Megan Granbois and Makena Hauge to form a strong high jumping unit for the Cowgirls.
“It was nice. I had more of a leadership role,” Abbey said. “They both could do great in the next two years.”
She said it was a benefit to have her younger sister working with her.
“She was always a huge supporter of me, even when we were arguing,” Abbey said. Asked if her younger sister accepted advice from her, Abbey laughed, “Not really.” Abbey was excited that the 400-meter relay team featuring herself, Megan Granbois, Hauge and Autumn Bergum qualified for finals.
“It was really fun,” Abbey said of the state meet. “It was a good experience.”
She thanks her family, coaches and friends for their support during the season.
She will compete in the high jump for Dickinson State University.
“I’m excited to get to experience track at a different level,” Abbey said. “I really do love track.”
