Summer time means recreation time for youngsters, and many of Wolf Point’s young people have been taking use of the activities that are available in Wolf Point.

“We’ve had a good turnout of kids,” Dan Horsmon, Wolf Point’s recreation director, said.

On those hot summer days, Wolf Point’s swimming pool has been extremely busy. The pool has been attracting an average of 200 swimmers a day. Capacity is 225 swimmers.

“We reached capacity a couple times this year,” Horsmon said.

The pool needed to be closed to repair a chlorine line for three days, but Horsmon says the pool is in good condition now.

There are about 12 lifeguards and maintenance employees at the pool. The lifeguards become certified in Williston, N.D.

The baseball and softball programs saw below average turnouts. Some teams needed to be combined near the end of seasons. “The softball portion is doing OK,” Horsmon said.

He conducted a tennis camp this week and says that sport is gaining more and more interest in the community.

Horsmon is excited that the park will have three soccer fields in the near future for that program. He’s also planning on adding a beach volleyball area. The baseball/softball fields will have new sprinklers.

The Wolf Point Lions Club continues raising funds for new playground equipment at Borgie Park. He hopes that the restrooms can be improved and that buildings can be re-painted.

During a recent visit to the park by state officials, Horsmon was encouraged to apply for another Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to cover needed improvements at the park.

He noted the degree of how recreation programs improve depends on parents and other volunteers performing duties such as coaching, officiating and scheduling.

“The big thing we need is community members and parents involved,” Horsmon said. “We have hired people, but they can only do so much.”
