The Badlands Celebration was held over three days at the Brockton powwow grounds July 30 through Aug. 1. Grand entry was held twice daily on Saturday and Sunday, with one evening performance Friday night. Dance categories featured adult, teen and junior categories. A candlelight ceremony was hosted by Spotted Bull Treatment Center Friday night. Specials honoring Dolly Stark and Leland Spotted Bird were featured Saturday and Sunday.

Buck Turcotte was on hand as one of several food vendors at the event.

“Badlands Celebration was great,” Turcotte told the Northern Plains Independent.

“It felt good to be back at the powwow seeing old friends we haven’t seen since the pandemic began. The committee did a great job and Turcotte Food Bus will be back in 2022!”

The celebration advisor was Doris Spotted Bird. Headman was Redsky Starr. Senior princess attendant was Jasalyn Lambert. First senior princess attendant was Kahloni Hoops and McKenzie Crawford was junior princess. Gracie Lambert was first attendant and Aaliya Roberts was mini princess.

Miley Crawford of Wolf Point won junior girls’ traditional. Blakeley Chaske from Spirit Lake, N.D., won junior girls’ jingle. Amar’e Birdtail from Poplar won junior girls’ fancy. Tessa Abbey from Mandaree, N.D., won teen girls’ traditional. Courtney Spotted Wolf from Brockton won teen girls’ jingle. Macy Quinn Johnson from Warm Springs, Ore., won teen girls’ fancy.

Brockton’s Wyatt Spotted Bird won junior boys’ fancy. Berkeley Chaske from Spirit Lake, N.D., won junior boys’ traditional. Donald Iceman from Poplar won junior boys’ grass. Wambdi Chaske won teen boys’ traditional. Justus Cree Jr. won teen boys’ grass. Trevor E. Walk won teen boys’ fancy.

Sharon Roberts of Ada, Okla., won women’s golden age. Nelenah Grey Eyes won women’s traditional. Laureen Yellow Hammer-Combs of Poplar won women’s jingle and Valarie Adrian of Worley, Idaho, won women’s fancy.

Andrew Windy Boy of Rocky Boy won men’s golden age. Donovan Abbey of Mandaree, N.D., won men’s traditional and Gauge Ackerman of Frazer won men’s grass.

Badlands secretary Talissa Eder said the celebration was roundly enjoyed.

“It felt good just to be there and to see everyone enjoying themselves singing and dancing. Good vibes all around,” Eder said.
