Free-Throw Tournament Part Of Class Reunion In Froid
As part of Froid’s 100th anniversary all-class reunion on Saturday, Aug. 7, a free-throw shooting contest took place in the school’s new gym.
“We needed to do something fun for the kids,” contest organizer David Ostby, class of 1969, said. “Sports are the heartbeats of these small towns.”
Ostby should know how important sports are for the community of Froid. When he was growing up, Froid was a consistent powerhouse in basketball.
He explained that when his younger brother Andy played on the 1971 team, the Cardinals placed fourth at the state boys’ basketball tournament.
He added that Andy had a graduating class of 24 students and he was part of a graduating class of 22 students.
“We tried hard and had a blast,” David said.
Despite David being sidelined with an injury during his senior season, Froid won the district title and placed third at the divisional tournament that year. The Cardinals lost by two points against Outlook in a challenge game.
After graduating from Froid, Ostby earned a degree in engineering at Montana State University. and then he had a career in nuclear resources in Idaho. He now lives in Bozeman.
“I like excuses to come back to northeastern Montana,” Ostby said. “No one understands it unless if you grown up here.”
He said that he, like a lot of alumni, keep track of the success of the Froid/Lake Red Hawks last year including the championship football run.
“I would had gone to the games, but that darn COVID,” Ostby said.
