Summer Reading Program Wraps Up

Summer Reading Program Wraps Up Summer Reading Program Wraps Up

Culbertson Librarian Leona Colvin told the Community News that the summer reading program has wrapped up successfully for the season.

“We’re very pleased with the results of our ‘Tails & Tales’ summer reading program,” said Colvin. “We had 74 children sign up and they read 449 hours in a month’s time!”

According to Colvin, the goal of a summer reading program is to keep kids from decreasing their academic skill levels. She said that in some cases, children can actually make gains in their learning by reading daily over the summer break.

After the difficult time many students had with virtual and remote learning last year, libraries across the country were eager to help families and especially children with their reading skills.

“I would say we helped children stay interested in reading and perhaps they’ll be ready to get back to school,” Colvin said. “A lot of them were excited to bring their reading logs in and report their results to us regularly at the library.”

Since the theme of the summer reading program had to do with animals this year, the library conducted a pet supply drive with its patrons and was able to donate a box full of much needed supplies to the Wolf Point Pound Puppies, a volunteer- run animal protection organization in Wolf Point.

Grand prizes for the summer reading program were awarded to readers that signed up for the program and read at least one hour during the month-long program.

Winners included: Stella Fox (10 years old and up), Ellie Shanks (6 to 9 years old), Hattie Featherston (3 to 5 years old) and Atticus Stuber (0 to 2 years old.) Additionally, Izack Rumsey won the Pay It Forward prize. He received two gift certificates to use at a local restaurant, one to use himself and another to give to a friend.

The library is planning to start its pre-school story hour on Tuesday, Oct. 5. For more information, contact Leona Colvin at 406-787-5275 or email at culbertsonpubliclibrary@ yahoo.com.
