Red Hawks Outscore Fusion To Stay Undefeated
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks’ big play offensive attack was on display as they outscored Richey/Lambert, 64-18, on Saturday, Oct. 2.
Froid/Lake Coach Michael Reiter was pleased with his team’s four scoring drives of one play and forcing a fumble early in the homecoming contest. He feels it was the squad’s best performance of the season.
“We came out and had a lot of energy,” Reiter said.
With the victory, the Red Hawks took a big step in winning the conference championship.
“We had a good week of practice and came out well,” sophomore Mason Dethman said.
The Red Hawks’ remaining regular-season schedule includes a game in Jordan on Saturday, Oct. 9, and then home contests against Savage and Bainville.
“We’re looking forward to the rest of our conference schedule and then to take it one game at a time in the playoffs,” Dethman said.
The Red Hawks earned the game’s first big break against the Fusion when Austen Hobbs recovered a fumble at the Fusion 24. Facing third down at the 14, Dethman connected with Brett Stentoft who ran near the end zone before fumbling the ball. Ashdyn Hobbs came up with the fumble recovery for a touchdown with 7:11 left in the first quarter. Dethman passed to Quinn Abar on the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Fusion’s Sage Spinner raced 78 yards for a touchdown. Abar blocked the kick to keep the score at 7-6.
On their first play on their next possession, the Red Hawks reached the end zone on a 62-yard dash by Dethman. A pass to Cian Logan on the conversion put the margin at 14-6.
Froid/Lake’s defense then stepped up when B. Stentoft and Javonne Nesbit stopped a third-down play and Abar registered a quarterback sack on fourth down at the Fusion four. The Red Hawks increased their lead to 20-6 on a four-yard run by Ashdyn Hobbs with 4:34 left in the first quarter.
The Fusion, however, kept the heat on when quarterback Grady Gonsioroski scrambled in from four yards out for a 20-12 game with 9:27 remaining in the half.
On first down, the Red Hawks struck on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Dethman to a wide open Connor Huft. Dethman passed to B. Stentoft on the conversion for a 27-12 advantage.
Froid/Lake’s final touchdown of the first half came on a 67-yard completion from Dethman to Huft with 4:17 left. Dethman’s pass to Abar put the margin at 34-12.
The Fusion drove deep into Froid/Lake territory late in the half, but the threat ended on an interception by Nesbit.
The Fusion opened the third quarter with a 46-yard, eight-play scoring drive. Gonsioroski ran in from seven yards out to pull Richey/ Lambert to 34-18.
After a 54-yard kickoff return by Ashdyn Hobbs to the Fusion 23, Dethman passed to Ashdyn Hobbs, who caught the ball at the 18 and made a couple of nice moves en route to the end zone. Dethman’s throw to B. Stentoft increased the gap to 41-18.
Dethman then recovered a fumble at the Fusion 17. On first down, he hit B. Stentoft for a touchdown with 5:35 remaining in the third quarter.
On the Fusion’s next offensive play, B. Stentoft intercepted a pitch and ran 18 yards for a touchdown. Dethman’s kick put the margin at 57-18.
