The Culbertson Cowgirls spent the night battling back before nipping Scobey in five sets during the opening round of the District 1C volleyball tournament in Scobey on Thursday, Oct. 28.

Culbertson came away with an 18-25, 23-25, 25-20, 2521, 15-13, victory.

Ahead by only an 18-17 margin in the fourth set, the Cowgirls used a block and a back-row kill by Makena Hauge to move ahead 22-17.

After Scobey cut the gap to 22-21, Culbertson scored on a kill by Destiny Thompson. The final point of the set was scored on an ace by Alicyn Ator.

The Cowgirls trailed 9-6 in the fifth set until a block and kill by Hauge along with an ace by Perla Burciaga produced a 9-9 deadlock.

After the Spartans took a 13-10 advantage, Culbertson battled back on a tip by Hauge, a kill by Thompson and an ace by Hauge for a 1313 deadlock.

The Cowgirls earned the final two points of the match on an ace by Hauge and a spike by Thompson.

Hauge finished with 23 kills, eight aces, four blocks and 20 digs.

Thompson accounted for 21 kills.

Koree Marchwick had 25 assists.

Leaders for Scobey included Whitley Maher with 15 kills, Jenna Linder with 14 assists, Kasslyn Baldry with three blocks, Karys Lamb with 11 digs and Sophia Handran with five aces.
