On the football field, Culbertson High School senior Kyler Kempton doesn’t seem like a kind guy.

When he carries the football, the tailback enjoys running over opponents. Defensively, he doesn’t shy away from hard hits.

Off the field, however, Kempton has a different personality. He is extremely polite dealing with adults and his faith in God guides his life.

After he completes his high school studies, Kempton will serve a two-year mission through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I’ve always looked forward to doing that,” Kempton said of the mission. Kempton, who attend church in Sidney, doesn’t know where the mission will take place yet.

He noted he’s been a believer in Jesus Christ for as long as he remembers. “Probably since I was born,” he said.

One of his favorite school activities is FFA where he serves as the Culbertson club’s treasurer.

“I like all the fun times and things that you learn,” Kempton said.

His favorite FFA competition is mechanics. The Culbertson team placed third at the district meet last year.

“I enjoy the hands-on part of it,” Kempton said.

After missing last season recovering from a concussion injury, Kempton has been a key member of this year’s Culbertson football squad.

“It feels so good to be back,” Kempton said. “I like being with my boys and like running the ball.”

He’s also proud of how the team pulls together on the defensive side.

Kempton showed great improvement throughout last track season and placed in the top eight at the district meet in the discus, shot put and javelin.

He said the keys to his improvement were hard work and the advice of his throwing coach, Mark Pederson.

Kempton’s goal is to qualify in the state meet for all three track events this school year.

His favorite class is any of the shop classes. During his high school career, his favorite teachers have been Jens Nielsen and Logan Nickoloff. He says his father, Josh, is his role model.

After completing his mission, Kyler plans to attend a trade school or complete an apprenticeship. His goal is becoming an electrician.

For now, he is happy for his education in Culbertson. “I love it. I won’t change it for the world,” Kempton said.
