After a strong start, the Froid/Lake Red Hawks fell short against Roy/Winifred at the Class C state volleyball tournament in Bozeman on Friday, Nov. 12.

The Red Hawks dropped the match by a 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 16-25, final to end their record-breaking season.

“Being at state was an amazing experience for our team,” Froid/Lake coach Kiah Smith said. “I am proud of the girls on their state performance. We came up short but now we have something to strive for in the future!”

An ace by Carolyne Christoffersen and a back-row kill by Dasani Nesbit put Froid/ Lake ahead 10-6 in the first set. The Red Hawks were able to increase their lead to 14-8 on another kill by Nesbit.

Kills by Jaeleigh Davidson and Mara Salvevold produced an 18-12 advantage. After the Outlaws fought back to 1814, the Red Hawks scored on kills by Christoffersen and Salvevold.

The Outlaws got as close as 22-19 before the Red Hawks ended the set with kills by Nesbit and J. Davidson.

A kill by Salvevold, a freshman, kept Froid/Lake close at 12-10 in the second set, but Roy/Winifred then grabbed a 20-14 advantage. After a kill by Nesbit, the Outlaws increased their lead to 23-17.

Froid/Lake scored on a tip by Meg Ator and a kill by Salvevold for a 23-19 game, but the Outlaws tallied the set’s final two points.

The Red Hawks fell behind early in the third set, but strong plays by Nesbit, Christoffersen and Ator closed the margin to 14-13. After Roy/ Winifred took a 20-16 lead, the Red Hawks battled back with three kills by Nesbit to cut the margin to 20-19.

The Outlaws accounted for the next four points and won the set by a 25-21 final.

A kill by Christoffersen pulled the Red Hawks to 1816 in the fourth set, but Roy/ Winifred scored the final seven points of the match.

Nesbit led the Red Hawks with 12 kills and four blocks. Aleah Johnson and Christoffersen each served aces.

Ator finished with 16 assists. Johnson had four digs.
