Speech And Drama Travel, Compete Live

Saturday, Nov. 13, saw the Culbertson speech and drama team travel to their first live tournament since January of 2020, according to coach Jeri Gustafson.

“Covid and the virtual meets we were required to take part in last year really hurt teams across the state,” said Gustafson. “Schools have total lost their programs. Students have lost interest in fear of having to compete virtually again and coaches have quit coaching for the very same reason. Our team took a huge hit on numbers, with only eight students currently competing, and one of those will be moving in mid-December.”

The eight competing stu- dents are seniors Zach Miller, Morgan Lucas and Eric Chilson, juniors Trevor Green, Mo Bighorn and Joseph McCarty, sophomore Yrene Maximo and freshman Trever Powell.

“We have a lot more talented students in our high school, but recruiting is tough following last year,” Gustafson said. “If there are any students wishing to join the team for the remainder of the season, please encourage them to contact Mrs. G. at school.”

Gustafson said the team traveled to Miles City Nov. 13 to take part in the Custer County Invitational. Zach Miller placed second in memorized public address, with Mo Bighorn taking seventh and Morgan Lucas placing eighth. Trevor Green placed third in informative with Eric Chilson in sixth. The team placed first in the Class C Speech Sweepstakes.

Saturday, Nov. 20, found the team participating in the Sidney Invitational Tournament. Zach Miller took first place in memorized public address and Mo Bighorn took third. Tevor Green placed first in informative speaking. Trever Powell took fourth in humorous oral interpretation, with Joseph McCarty coming in ninth. Yrene Maxino took seventh in serious oral interpretation. The team placed second in Class C Speech Sweepstakes.

The December schedule will find the team traveling to Columbus on Dec. 4; Laurel on Dec. 11 and the team will be hosting a home meet on Dec. 18.

The team needs judges for the home meet. If you are willing to lend a hand, contact Gustafson at 406-7876241.
