Teams Prepare To Tip Off Basketball Seasons
Cowgirls Return Five Starters For Season
With five players with starting experience back, the Culbertson Cowgirls should provide an exciting girls’ basketball season in District 2C.
Colby McGinnis is the program’s new head coach. Mc-Ginnis’ experience includes being an assistant in both Fairview and Culbertson.
“Things are going pretty good,” McGinnis said of pre-season practices. “The girls are anxious to start playing.”
Returning starters include senior guard Autumn Bergum, 6-0 junior Makena Hauge, 5-10 junior Megan Granbois, junior guard Alicyn Ator and 5-8 sophomore Destiny Thompson.
Hauge earned All-Conference honors last season. She was also voted to the second team for defense. Granbois was a second team All-Conference pick.
Top reserves are expected to include junior Perla Burciaga, junior Kenadee Kempton and freshman Jazzmin Fugere.
McGinnis said the squad is concentrating on improving its defense.
“We have enough scorers, I’m not too worried about scoring points,” McGinnis said.
A strength should be the Cowgirls’ offensive rebounding.
“We have good finishers around the rim,” McGinnis said.
The team’s assistant coach is Sabrina Labatte.
Pre-season favorites in the league include Plentywood, Froid/Lake and MonDak. “I’m not counting ourselves out of there,” McGinnis said.
Culbertson’s first games are at Richey/Lambert on Friday, Dec. 3, and then home against Fairview on Saturday, Dec. 4.
“There’s a lot to work on,” McGinnis said. “We’re learning from each other.”
