The Culbertson Cowboys earned their first victory of the boys’ basketball season by defeating Brockton, 68-29, in Culbertson on Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Culbertson enjoyed an excellent start as the Cowboys scored the game’s first 12 points. After a turnaround shot by Colin Avance started the scoring, Payton Perkins drove in for a basket. A steal and layup by Maurice Bighorn increased the margin to 6-0.

Isaiah Bighorn then connected from three-point range with 2:08 left in the first quarter. After an inside shot by Shea Scott, Perkins hit a free throw for a 12-0 lead.

Brockton’s first points came on a drive by Quinn-Dale Pretty Paint with three seconds remaining in the period.

Culbertson increased its advantage to 20-2 with the first eight points of the second quarter on a basket off a rebound by James Kirkaldie, four points by Avance and a basket by freshman Dawson Bergum.

After Brockton’s Pretty Paint scored at the 5:40 mark, the Cowboys responded with hoops by Avance, Scott and Perkins for a 26-4 lead.

The Warriors struck for the next seven points on a three-pointer by Kameron Rattling Thunder, a basket by Wambidi Yellow Hammer and a hoop by Blair Stump.

The Cowboys ended the half on a high note when a basket by Kirkaldie and a three-pointer by Perkins put the margin at 31-14.

Culbertson scored 17 points in the third quarter to earn a 48-20 advantage.

Top scorers for the Cowboys were Avance with 18, M. Bighorn with 13 and Perkins with 10 points. Also scoring were Kirkaldie with nine, Scott with six, I. Bighorn with five, Kobe Nickoloff with two, Carson Solem with two, Bergum with two and Mark Kirkaldie with one.

Pretty Paint led the Warriors with 14 points. Stump scored six and Yellow Hammer added four.
