New Minimum Wage Begins In Montana
Montana’s new minimum wage of $9.20 per hour is now in effect with the start of the new year.
Montana statute requires the minimum wage be adjusted annually based on changes in inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index all Urban Consumers from August of the year in which the calculation is made and is rounded to the nearest $0.05. Department is required to make this adjustment by Sept. 30 each year.
The previous minimum wage in Montana was $8.75.
The 45 cent increase in the minimum wage is higher than the increases in the last several years due to higher inflation. If you have questions regarding this increase, contact the state’s Employment Relations Division at 406-444-6543.
Starting on Jan. 1, more than 20 states increased their minimum wage.
California became the first state to reach a $15 minimum wage. Some of the other states with higher minimum wages include Washington at $14.49, Massachusetts at $14.25, New York at $13.20, New Jersey at $13 for large employers, Arizona at $12,80, Maine at $12.75, Vermont at $12.55 and Maryland at $12.50 for large employers.
States with the federal minimum wage of $7.25 include Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio for small employers, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
