New Year Starts Cold For Area

Bitter weather ended 2021 and began the 2022 year in northeastern Montana. The National Weather Service’s reports included low temperatures of 35 degrees below zero in Wolf Point and Malta on New Year’s Day and 27 below zero in Glasgow.

The area experienced a week of temperatures well below zero during the final week of 2021.

“We definitely had a below normal December and it was definitely colder than last year,” meteorologist Ryan Bernhart said.

Another Arctic blast has been forecasted to hit the area this week. Bernhart said areas north of the Missouri River could see low temperatures between 20 and 30 below zero on Thursday morning, Jan. 6.

Temperatures are anticipated to improve starting on Friday, Jan. 7.

In other weather-related news, the National Weather Service reports that 2021 was the driest year on record for Glasgow with only 6.63 inches of precipitation. The old record was 6.64 inches in 2017.

It was the second driest year in Malta, third driest in Wolf Point, fourth driest in Jordan and fifth driest in Sidney.
