Cowgirls Capture League Victory Over Circle Squad
After an impressive first half, the Culbertson Cowgirls fought off Circle, 40-27, during District 2C action on Friday, Jan. 7.
The Cowgirls accounted for the first quarter’s last 16 points for a 16-3 advantage as the Wildcats struggled against Culbertson’s fullcourt defensive pressure. Makena Hauge scored seven of the points and Megan Granbois added six points.
Two consecutive drives by Granbois increased Culbertson’s lead to 21-7 during the second quarter. A three-pointer by Sierra Nagle pulled the Wildcats to 21-10 at the half. Circle then ran off the first nine points of the third quarter, including five by Alexis Moline, for a two-point game.
The scoring of Hauge and Destiny Thompson kept the Cowgirls up, 27-23, after three quarters of play.
Culbertson increased its lead to 32-24 on the freethrow shooting of Granbois. With the score at 32-27 with 2:48 remaining, the Cowgirls used the foul shooting of Granbois, Hauge and Thompson to earn a 37-27 advantage with 1:07 left.
Two free throws by Hauge and another by Granbois in the last minute put the final at 40-27.
Leading the Cowgirls were Hauge with 17 and Granbois with 14 points. Also scoring were Thompson with seven and Alicyn Ator with two points.
Circle’s top scorers were Moline with nine, Grace Gackle with seven and Nagle with five. Rounding out the scoring were Jalyn Curtiss with three and Kayli Haynie with two.
