Froid/Lake Girls Defeat Bainville in District 2C Contest
The Froid/Lake Red Hawks were in a battle the entire way, but they emerged with a 37-31 win over Bainville in girls’ basketball action on Thursday, Jan. 13.
Ahead by a 30-26 margin after three quarters of play, the Red Hawks enjoyed a strong start of the fourth quarter with freshman Brooklynn Nordwick scoring on a drive and Baylee Davidson hitting a three-pointer.
The Bulldogs spent the night fighting back and that continued in the fourth quarter. Kaitlyn Adkins connected on a three-pointer to pull the Bulldogs to 35-29 with still 4:15 left to play.
Froid/Lake increased the gap to 37-29 on a basket by Davidson and held the Bulldogs to two points the rest of the way.
Davidson accounted for 20 of Froid/Lake’s points. Also scoring were Dasani Nesbit with eight, Mara Salvevold with four, Nordwick with four and Meg Ator with one.
Leading Bainville were Elsie Wilson with 11, Adkins with 10 and Hailey Berwick with eight points. Brecklyn Pippenger added two points.
The Red Hawks led 5-4 at the end of the opening quarter, but a basket off a rebound by H. Berwick put the Bulldogs ahead to open the second period.
Froid/Lake then exploded for the game’s next 11 points with Davidson scoring five, Salvevold adding four and Nesbit hitting a short jumper.
Behind by a 16-6 margin, the Bulldogs came storming back on three-pointers by Wilson, Adkins and H. Berwick to trail only 18-15 at the half.
The Red Hawks started off on a strong note in the third quarter when Davidson hit a short jumper and a three-pointer for a 28-15 margin. After Bainville’s Wilson canned a three-pointer, Froid/Lake’s Meg Ator sank a free throw.
A three-pointer from way out by H. Berwick and an inside shot by B. Pippenger kept the Bulldogs close. A three-pointer by Wilson pulled Bainville to 30-26 at the end of the period.
