Eighteen Eastern Division Class B and C schools converged on Plentywood High School Saturday, Jan. 22, seeking to qualify competitors for the coveted top six positions in 17 Montana High School Association sanctioned events.

Said coach Jeri Gustafson, “Tension and stress levels ran high for both the competitors and their coaches as the day progressed. Our Culbertson Speech team was able to qualify all five competitors for the finals round, where students performed in hopes of being one of the state qualifiers.”

Trevor Green earned 1st place in informative speaking, with Eric Chilcon taking 3rd place. Zach Miller earned 4th place in memorized public address, followed by Morgan Lucas in 8th place. Joseph McCarty took 8th place in humorous oral interpretation. All students earned sweepstakes points, garnering CHS the Class C 1st place Speech Sweepstakes trophy. “Congratulations, Class C Champs, on bringing home the gold,” said Gustafson.

Gustafson brought home the Eastern Division Speech Coach of the Year honor.

Qualifying students will be departing Thursday for the Class B/C state tournament, which will be hosted by Huntley Project High School On Jan. 28-29.

“Spirit bags will once again be outside of the office for everyone to show their support for these amazing competitors,” Gustafson said.
