Cowgirls Drop Game Against Thunder

Culbertson’s girls’ basketball squad couldn’t quite recover from a poor start and lost to MonDak, 40-31, at home on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The hot-shooting Thunder jumped out to an 18-1 advantage in the first quarter. Elizabeth Field, a senior guard, accounted for 14 points in the opening quarter.
Baskets by Kiarra Brunelle and Sayler Stewart along with two free throws by Field put MonDak ahead 24-3 three minutes into the second quarter.
Culbertson then started to battle back as two hoops by Destiny Thompson got the Cowgirls’ offense going. A layup by Megan Granbois off a long pass from Makena Hauge and a steal and shot by Hauge put the half-time score at 24-11.
Granbois opened the third quarter with a three-point play, but three-pointers by Brunelle and Emma Smart put the Thunder up 30-14.
The Thunder led 34-19 at the end of the third quarter and by a 36-21 margin heading into the contest’s final five minutes.
A basket by Granbois and five points by Hauge cut the gap to 37-28. A free throw by Perla Burciaga put the score at 37-29 with 2:12 remaining.
The Cowgirls, however, couldn’t get closer than eight points down the stretch.
Top scorers for Culbertson were Granbois with 10 and Hauge with nine points. Also scoring were Burciaga with five, Thompson with four and Ayden Ator with three.
Field finished with 24 points for the Thunder. Brunelle added nine points.
