Wolf Point’s wrestling team qualified two athletes including divisional champion Mason Garfield for the state meet during the weekend. The divisional meet took place in Colstrip.

Wolf Point’s Jordan Davis at 160 pounds faced the top wrestler in the state, “Jordan wrestled him earlier this year in Sidney. Jordan did a good job, he worked hard and got midway to the second round,” Wolf Point Coach Scott Vandall said. “That’s a great effort by Jordan, we only lasted 30 seconds last time. He went half the match with the number one kid in the state.”

Davis then wrestled a wrestler from Red Lodge in the third round to get to state. “We did good, just made one little mistake and it cost us,” Vandall said. “Jordan had a good year of learning. He finished the season 11-22. We talked that night in the room and he knows what we need to work on for next year. I can’t wait to see what comes.”

Chance Smith had a great weekend at 205 pounds. He won his quarter-final match and made it to the semi-final round, which earned him the right to advance to state. “He drew the number one kid in the state. We lost that match, but we seen a different Chance,” Vandall said. “He did a good job and finished fourth. On the weekend. I truly believe that he is a dark horse at state. I feel he has a good shot to place this next weekend.”

Mason Garfield won his quarter-final match at 205 pounds. “He qualified for state with a lot of ease. We then had a kid from Huntley that was the number two kid in the state. Mason has faced this kid for four years,” Vandall said. “This was one heck of a match. It was back and fourth and we got the reversal in the last 15 seconds of the match. This was a big surprise to a lot of people in the gym. It was kind of creepy the whole gym went kind of quiet and you could see the disbelief on people’s faces. There were few that knew we could pull it off and they were smiles all the way.” In the finals, Garfield faced the number one wrestler kid in the state from Glasgow. “We have meet him twice this year, he beat us both times. We thought we could beat him,” Vandall said. “Mason set the tone right off the bat and got an early take down. It was game on at that point. Mason knew what he had to do and got the job done” With about only 20 second left in the match, it was only two-point match. “The kid went to throw Mason and we countered, got the take down and the win. And man that gym erupted,” Vandall said. “Mason pulled off two of the biggest upsets of the day. He beat the number one and two kids in the state. Mason Garfield is our 205 Divisional champion. That was one heck of a job he did.”

The Wolves now head to the girls’ and boys’ all state championships.

Joli Beston is seeded third. She will start wrestling Thursday afternoon.

Garfield is a number one seed and Smith is an eighth seed. The boys start action on Friday.

“It’s gonna be one heck of weekend. We have to wrestle to our ability,” Vandall said. “I think we make some noise this weekend. I’m looking forward to see the outcome. I would like to wish Poplar Coach Jason Frederick and his staff and wrestlers good luck this weekend as we both represent our two communities. As we like to say let’s wreck someone’s day.”
